Master of Education

The MEd program is offered on a full and flex-time basis. Both full and flex-time students can register for onsite courses and online courses unless otherwise specified in an offer of admission.

Degree and Program Requirements

Students may complete the program through one of the following routes: Thesis Route, Research Paper Route, or Research Project + Seminar.

To graduate with a Master of Education students must:

  1. satisfy all of the stated requirements for the degree;
  2. successfully complete the following two core courses with a minimum grade of 70% in each course:
    1. EDUC 5196 Understanding Education;
    2. EDUC 5157 Survey of Research Methods;
  3. successfully complete additional courses from any of the themes with a minimum grade of 70% in each course:
    1. Adult Education (AE);
    2. Language and Literacy (LL);
    3. Leadership (L);
    4. Special Education (SE);
    5. Teaching and Pedagogy (TP);
    6. Other;
  4. successfully complete all courses in no more than two attempts;
  5. successfully complete one of the following:
    1. EDUC 5454 Master’s Thesis;
    2. EDUC 5115 Research Paper;
    3. EDUC 5186 Research Project + Seminar.
  6. Students pursuing the thesis route must successfully complete four additional 3-credit MEd courses with a minimum grade of 70% in each;
  7. Students pursuing the research paper route must successfully complete six additional 3-credit MEd courses with a minimum grade of 70% in each;
  8. Students pursuing the Research Project and Seminar route must successfully complete seven additional 3-credit MEd courses with a minimum grade of 70% in each.

Additional Information

  1. Courses in the Fall, Winter, or Spring/Summer terms are scheduled in one of three ways:
    1. on-site, over a series of weekends or weekly evening sessions;
    2. online;
    3. blended (onsite portion over a series of weekends or weekly evening sessions).
  2. Class hours, or equivalent online participation, will total at least 36 hours per 3-credit course.

Course Enrolment Per Term

Full-time and Flex-time students enrolled in the Master of Education program must register in one to a maximum of four 3-credit course(s), in each of the Fall, Winter, and Spring/Summer terms.

Residency Requirements

Students enrolled in the Master of Education program must successfully complete at least 18 credits at Nipissing University.

Note:

Students who are admitted to the Master of Education program “on probation” will be assessed once a minimum of 6 credits (two, 3-credit courses) have been attempted and:

  1. If their final grade in each course is 70% or greater, admission probation status will be removed;
  2. If their final grade is below 70% in either of these first two courses, they will be withdrawn from the program.
