Description:

This course examines the history of Europe from the end of World War II in 1945 to the collapse of Communism in 1989-91. It provides a thematic and chronological survey of European politics, culture and society during this period. The course begins with an examination of the effects of two world wars on European society. Major themes of the course include the effects of World War II on postwar Europe, the division and reconstruction of Europe, and the economic miracle of the early postwar period, the women's movement of the 1960s, the turmoil of 1968, and the development of new political trends beginning in the 1970s. The aim of the course is to introduce students the most important events in the second half of the twentieth century.
