Description:

This course will explore the notion of limited identities in the Canadian context by focusing on one of Canada's regions (excluding Ontario) or by taking a comparative approach focusing on two or more regions. 13FW - Farming, Food and Farm People Farming is suddenly cool. The sins of mainstream farming, which is charged with destroying the environment with pesticides and genetically modified crops, contributing to climate change, and producing unhealthy food, are discussed everywhere. Meanwhile, people flock to farm apprenticeships to learn how to grow food. This course examines the history of farming regions in what is now Canada. It will consider the growing of food, and the people who grew it, from First Nations farmers to the present. Thus students will get perspective on these controversies by examining the changes in farming methods over time, and the effects of these changes on rural people, the land, and Canadian and global society as a whole. No background in farming is required.
