This course examines the portrayal of women in both mainstream and alternative cinema, including the influence of social, economic and political forces on developing roles of women in film and a comparison of the representation of women on the screen with the actuality of their lives in society. These issues are studied in the context of the representation of gender in American and European films, the Hollywood star system, acting styles, narrative forms, and theories of spectatorship and identification. A wide variety of significant films are screened and discussed, including the work of women directors. This course may be credited towards English Studies and a Major in Fine Arts (Art History and Visual Studies stream). This course is also offered as FILM 2305.
