Students explore the history of Renaissance art and architecture, focusing on the interrelationship between visual art, religion, sexuality and colonialism throughout the fourteenth to sixteenth centuries. Themes may include the relations - artistic, economic, and ideological - between northern and southern Europe, the stimulus to innovative forms of art production provided by contact with non-Western peoples, representations of sex and sexuality, and the rapidly shifting role of religion and science in visual art.
