HIST 3565 Justice or Vengeance? Mass Atrocity, War Crimes, and Perpetrator Trials in Historical Perspective
Prerequisites:12 credits of History with at least three credits at the 2000-level; or any 54 credits completed.
Hours:36 hours of seminar and 36 hours of experiential learning per term.
Students consider the history and practice of modern international retributive justice and the legal, moral, and political questions that the international community faces in dealing with state sponsored violence. Students visit the North Bay courthouse and attend at least one session in open court. In class, students work with primary historical and legal documents and draw upon perspectives provided by the work of historians, legal scholars, and social scientists.
