CLAS 3016  Economy and Social Class in the Ancient World

Prerequisites:

Any 12 credits in Classical Studies, with at least three of at the 2000 level.

Hours:

Three hours of lecture per week for one term.

Description:

Students examine the evolution of ancient economies and the social structures, dynamics, and conflicts they engendered from the Neolithic Period to Late Antiquity in ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, the Near East, Greece, and Rome. Students pay special attention to such topics as slavery, trade, land ownership, concepts of citizenship, and the close relationship between economic, social, and political change.
