Students examine the different interfaces between religion, modernity and state power. The course considers the religious and philosophical underpinnings of colonization and imperialism, including the conceptions of terra nullius and the “civilizing mission” and their impacts, with a particular focus on the Canadian case. Students also look at the practice of genocide and its relationship to religion using case studies. This course may be credited towards Gender Equality and Social Justice.
