Description:

Students explore the historical denial of legal personality to Indigenous peoples under international law. They trace the evolution of international law, especially the impact of Indigenous diplomacy at the United Nations culminating in the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Students assess the prospects of implementing the Declaration and the limits of relying on international rights as an instrument for Indigenous justice. This course may be credited towards Indigenous Studies
