Description:

What is madness? Is it “a sane response to an insane society”? What does it mean to “medicalize” madness? Students explore the medical sciences, as well as the social, political, and cultural significance of Western ideas of madness for systems of gender, race, and economic inequality. What can the history of who has been deemed “mad” or “psychologically disordered” teach us about our collective identities and systems of power?
