Students are introduced to the historical and contemporary issues facing Aboriginal communities in Canada (with an emphasis on First Nations and the Métis Nation), in the context of social welfare and social work practice. The impact of policies, structures, and practices is explored in relation to how they contribute to the continuing marginalization of these groups. Students learn about the significance of the worldviews and values of Aboriginal peoples as they relate to the provision of social work services. Concepts of “helper” and “ally” are explored from an Aboriginal perspective. Issues of selfdetermination are a core component of the course.
