Admission Requirements for Undergraduate Degree, Post-Baccalaureate Programs and Post-Baccalaureate Certificates Requiring Previous Post Secondary Studies

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) for Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) Graduates

Nipissing University offers Registered Practical Nurses a 3-year compressed BScN Program. The Post RPN to BScN compressed program will be offered through a full-time delivery model and will be six semesters in length.

Successful completion of a two year Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) diploma with a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 from either one of the following colleges: Cambrian College, Canadore College, College Boreal, Confederation College, Northern College, Niagara College and Sault College, as well as successful completion of the Canadian Practical Nurses Registration Examination (CPNRE) or proof of eligibility to write and subsequently pass the CPNRE is required for admission consideration. This is a limited enrollment program.  The minimum GPA required for admission consideration may be higher than the stated minimum.  There is only one intake per year (September).

Nipissing University offers currently employed Registered Practical Nurses the opportunity to complete the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) degree through a blended delivery option.  Admission consideration will be given to applicants who have successfully completed a two year Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) diploma (not certificate) from an Ontario college with a minimum GPA of 3.0.  Applicants must also be a current registered member in good standing with the College of Nurses in Ontario (CNO) as an RPN and be an employee (with a letter of support) of one Nipissing’s partner health care agencies. This is a limited enrollment program. The minimum GPA required for admission consideration may be higher than the stated minimum. There are two intakes per year (January and September).

Post-Baccalaureate Diplomas in Business
(Pending approval from the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities)

The School of Business offer Post-Baccalaureate diplomas in Business Administration, Accounting, Marketing, International Business, Human Resources Management and Finance. Admission consideration will be given to applicants who have graduated from a non-business degree program from a recognized university. International applicants must have at least six credits of university English and/or Communications (at a recognized English language university in an English speaking country) prior to admission or have met Nipissing University's English language proficiency requirements through the acceptable English language tests. The English/Communication courses and/or English language tests must have been completed within the two years prior to attending Nipissing University. Domestic applicants with international education may be required to meet the English/Communication requirement unless otherwise exempt under Nipissing’s English Language Proficiency policy.

Post-Baccalaureate Certificates in Business
(Pending approval from the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities)

Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Human Resources Management

This certificate is designed for applicants who wish to pursue the HRPA-CHRP designation.  Applicants will possess, at minimum, a three-year university degree for admission consideration.

Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in General Management

This certificate is designed for graduates of non-business degree programs who wish to pursue business studies.  Applicants will possess a non-business undergraduate degree for admission consideration.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) Scholar Practitioner Program

Admission consideration is based on the following criteria:

• A recognized undergraduate degree with a minimum overall average of 75% (calculated on the best 10 full course equivalents not including transfer courses). Applicants with final degrees containing less than 10 full course equivalents will not be considered.
• Successful completion of one (1) course in anatomy and physiology and one (1) course in general psychology at the university level from a recognized university
• CASPerTM assessment

Bachelor of Social Work - Professional Years (3 and 4)

Admission to the Bachelor of Social Work - Professional Years (3 and 4) is very limited. Admission consideration is based on the following criteria:

• Successful completion of a minimum of 60 credits (10 full course equivalents) including SWRK-1007 (or equivalent), SWRK-2006 (or equivalent), SWRK-2106 (or equivalent), SWLF-1006 (or equivalent), 6 credits (one full course equivalent) in Humanities and 6 credits (one full course equivalent) in Science;
• Minimum 70% in SWRK-1007 (or equivalent), SWRK-2006 (or equivalent), SWRK-2106 (or equivalent) and SWLF-1006 (or equivalent)
• Minimum 70% overall average;
• Statement of Interest;
• Analysis of a Social Issue;
• Resume of Volunteer, Work and Educational Experience; and
• One academic and one personal/professional reference

Part-time Study Applicants and distance delivery, and Non-Degree Student Applications

Fall, Winter, Spring, or Summer Sessions

Applicants seeking admission to a degree program on a part-time basis or as a non-degree student should visit the Nipissing University website (www.nipissingu.ca/registrarforms) to select the appropriate application form. The form, required supporting documentation and the corresponding application fee must be received before an admission decision will be made. Also, some Nipissing degree programs are not available for part-time study.

Re-admission of Prior Nipissing Students to Full-time or Part-time study

Former Nipissing students who have not registered in Nipissing courses in more than the past twelve month period must apply for re-admission. Applications can be found at www.nipissingu.ca/registrarforms. The Application, required supporting documentation and corresponding fee must be submitted prior to the application being considered. Documentation of any educational studies pursued since the last registration at Nipissing will be required. Re-admitted students are required to meet current degree requirements. A meeting with an Academic Advisor is advisable to ensure current degree program requirements are met.

Admission Requirements

Applicants from Ontario Secondary School

The minimum requirement for admission consideration to Nipissing University is the completion of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), with a combination of a minimum of six 4U/4M courses including ENG4U. In addition, specific 4U courses are required depending upon the degree program applied to. The admissions average is calculated using the best grades as required including pre-requisite courses. The admissions cut-off averages for full-time (30 credits) status are at least 70% and can be higher. Please refer to the Admissions Chart for specific course requirements for Nipissing degree programs.

Admission is competitive and minimum cut-off averages are established each year. The admissions cut-off averages for undergraduate programs for full-time (30 credits) status are at least 70% and can be higher. A minimum of 75% is required for consideration for degrees with Concurrent Education. A minimum of 80% is required for History with an Orientation to a Master of Arts in History. Those applying to any Nipissing undergraduate program, with less than 70% may be considered for admission to our Liberal Arts or Liberal Science program with reduced course loads with our Foundations Pathway option. Applicants must present a minimum overall average of 60% (calculated using the best grades including required courses) for consideration for admission to Nipissing.

Concurrent Grade 12 Applicants

Subject to certain conditions, a Grade 12 student may take a Nipissing course concurrent with a secondary school program, but credit will not be granted for a passed course until the admission requirements of the University are met.

Such a student must have obtained at least a “B” standing in their studies to date and have a positive recommendation from a guidance counsellor and/or school principal.  Grade 12 students may take up to six credits concurrently per term.  Their academic records will be reviewed at the end of each session.

Applicants from other Canadian Secondary Schools and CEGEPs in Quebec

Individual degree programs have specific course requirements. Please refer to the Admissions Chart for specific course requirements for Nipissing degree programs. *Applicants from Quebec who have completed more than one year of CEGEP (more than 12 academic courses) will be considered for admission with advanced standing. Applicants who have completed the DEC program with a cumulative average of 'B' or better will be considered for admission with advanced standing to a maximum of 30 credits. Prerequisite subjects still apply.

Saskatchewan

English 30A and 30B plus four Grade 12 courses numbered 30 or 30A

International Baccalaureate (IB)

Applicants who have successfully completed the International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma with at least six subjects, including three at a higher level, with a minimum final grade of 24, will be considered for admission. Students who successfully complete the International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma with a score of 24 or higher are eligible to receive up to 30 transfer credits, equivalent to one year of full-time study. Eligibility will be considered for all IB courses (higher & standard level) completed with a score of 5 or higher.

Students are also eligible to receive transfer credit for individual higher & standard level IB courses completed with a score of 5 or higher.

Advanced Placement (AP)

Applicants who have completed Advanced Placement (AP) courses are encouraged to submit their examination results. Official AP score reports must be sent directly to Nipissing University. Advanced standing will be granted for most AP courses completed with a grade of 4 or higher, to a maximum of 18 credits. Nipissing's DI code is 4149.

International Applicants

Nipissing encourages qualified applicants from outside of Canada to consider applying to degree programs at Nipissing University. Interested applicants must apply for admission through the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC). Applications, the appropriate application fee and the required official documents (transcripts and other documentation) must be received by the Office of the Registrar by April 1 for September admissions consideration. International applicants are not eligible for consideration under Nipissing University’s Mature Student Admission Policy. 

All international college and university transcripts must be assessed (Credential Evaluation Report, including a Course-By-Course Analysis) by World Education Services –www.wes.org/ca.

Applicants will be expected to show proof of English language proficiency and must have completed courses in specific academic disciplines depending upon the degree program to which they have applied. International applicants may qualify for transfer credit for previously-completed studies at non-Canadian universities.

Once an admission offer has been made, it is the applicant’s responsibility to obtain the necessary documents required to study in Canada. A Study Permit is required to study at a Canadian university for periods of 6 months or longer. Note that citizens from some countries are also required to obtain a Temporary Resident Visa to enter Canada. International students studying at universities in Ontario are required to purchase mandatory medical health insurance. The insurance is known as UHIP (University Health Insurance Plan) and must be purchased upon arrival at Nipissing University.

Financial aid is not normally available to International applicants. International secondary school applicants are eligible for Nipissing’s Entrance Scholarships starting at $1,500 for “A” average students. Limited opportunities for on-campus employment are available for international students, after the first year of study is completed, via the International Work-Study Program. Minimum Admission Requirements for International Applicants

All applicants are considered on an individual basis. The meeting of minimum requirements does not guarantee admission. Refer to the Admissions Chart for specific subject requirements for each degree program.

Applicants from Great Britain, the Caribbean and other countries with General Certificate of Education (GCE) equivalents

Applicants must present a minimum of the General Certificate of Education (GCE) with satisfactory standing in at least five subjects, two of which must be at the advanced level, or satisfactory standing in at least four subjects, three of which must be at the advanced level. Two Advanced Supplementary/Advanced Subsidiary (AS) subjects are considered equal to one Advanced Level subject for admissions purposes. Caribbean applicants may also present the Caribbean Examinations (CXC) Caribbean Secondary School Education Certificate (CSEC) and the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations (CAPE). The completed CAPE Diploma must include a total of at least six units with grades 1, 2 or 3. All program specific prerequisites must be included at either the CSEC/O Level or at the CAPE/A Level. CXC papers must be at the General Proficiency Level with grades 1, 2 or 3. Advanced Standing credit may be awarded for A level results.

Applicants from Middle Eastern countries

Applicants must present a minimum of the Senior Matriculation Certificate and/or completion of first year at a recognized university depending upon the country.

Applicants from the United States

Admissions consideration will be given to applicants from the United States who graduate with a “B” average from Grade 12 at an accredited high school and present high SAT or ACT (minimum composite score of 24) scores and at least two SAT Subject Tests or AP/IB subjects appropriate to their proposed area of study. Applicants with AP examination credits may be eligible for admission with Advanced Standing credit. Nipissing’s SAT code is 4149 and ACT code is 5167.

Other applicants from the USA must have completed a minimum of one school year 30 semester credits (45 quarter credits) at an accredited post-secondary institution. Applicants who have completed more than 30 semester credits at an accredited post-secondary institution will be assessed on an individual basis for potential transfer credit or advanced standing.

Other International Applicants

Applicants possessing the requirements necessary for admission to a recognized university in their home country may be eligible for admissions consideration.

Applicants seeking admission on the basis of qualifications or certificates not mentioned above must submit original official documents to the Office of the Registrar for evaluation. Certificates not written in English must be accompanied by notarized English translations from recognized sources.  All international college and university transcripts must be assessed (Credential Evaluation Report, including a Course-By-Course Analysis) by World Education Services –www.wes.org/ca.

Orientation to a Master of Arts (MA) in History (OMAH)

OMAH is a five-year program that guarantees admission to the Master of Arts in History, provided students complete their degree including the OMAH specific courses with a minimum 75% on their last 10 full course equivalents. OMAH students receive a high-impact and exclusive degree in a small class setting. Students will have the opportunity to work closely with faculty while studying in all the major areas of the History program, participating in the History Society, and taking part in an experiential learning course or community or international placement or research assistantship. Students graduate as a Master of Arts in History, a credential that will prepare students for exciting careers or other graduate programs in transitional justice, conflict studies/state violence, history, law, politics, gender, and environmental studies.

Admission to a Bachelor of Arts (BA) Honours Specialization in History degree with OMAH - Direct from Secondary School

A minimum 80% overall average on the best six combination of 4U/ 4M courses or equivalent is required for admission consideration to OMAH. The OMAH is a limited enrollment program. Meeting the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee admission. Applicants who are not admitted to a Bachelor of Arts Honours Specialization in History with an Orientation to a Master of Arts in History may still receive an offer of admission to a BA Honours Specialization in History, but not with Orientation to an MA in History. Applicants who do not receive admission out of High School may apply for Upper Year Admission to the Orientation to a Master of Arts in History during their first year at Nipissing. Application does not guarantee admission. 

Admission to a Bachelor of Arts (BA) Honours Specialization in History degree with OMAH - Upper Year Admission

Admission consideration for a BA Honours Specialization in History with an Orientation to a Masters in History (Upper-Year Admission) requires the completion of a minimum of 18 credits of undergraduate study at Nipissing University, and no more than 30 university credits (including transfer credits). Application forms are available from the Office of the Registrar and must be submitted by the specified deadline. A minimum 72% overall average on all university courses completed is required in order to be considered. Students who have already completed a university degree are not eligible for admission. This is a limited enrollment program. Meeting the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee admission. Upper Year admission is also dependent on space availability.

Students who are admitted to the BA Honours Specialization in History, and who complete their degree including the OMAH specific courses, with a minimum 75% average on the last ten (10) full (20 half/semester) courses, are guaranteed admission to the Master of Arts (MA) in History. This offer is for the academic year following the completion of their degree. Upon completion of a BA Honours Specialization in History with an Orientation to an MA in History, students must indicate to the Office of the Registrar by the specified deadline they wish to continue on to the MA in History. Candidates must ensure they meet all minimum requirements for their undergraduate degree that include the following set of courses:

Of the 60 credits of History that students must complete to earn an Honours Specialization, 3 credits in each of European, international, gender, Canadian, and environmental history must be completed by the time of graduation.

Applicants Possessing Post-Secondary Education

Admission with Transfer Credit

Applicants who wish to transfer to Nipissing University from another recognized post secondary institution may qualify for transfer credit when there is significant equivalency in course content. Transfer credit may be granted as a block of credits or as specific courses. If a specific equivalence to a course is not available at Nipissing, the University will consider granting an unspecified, nonequivalent course. Block credits are typically granted when a graduate of a program wishes to transfer credits to another program that is very closely related in content. Transfer credit will not normally be granted for practical or clinical courses taken in specific areas such as Nursing, Physical & Health Education & Social Work. To be considered for transfer credits candidates must submit an application for admission. In addition  to transcripts, course descriptions and/or syllabi may also be required.

Applicants Transferring from Other Universities

Transfer credit will be considered for a course provided a grade of “C” or higher was achieved. A course with a grade of “D” may be considered only when there are an equal number of course equivalents with “B” grades or higher. The granting of transfer credits will vary depending on the degree program and major to which the applicant is admitted. Nipissing University residency requirements apply.

Admission of Students Who Were Required to Withdraw from a University

Applicants who have been required to withdraw from a university may apply for admission consideration to Nipissing University after “sitting out” for at least one full year. 

Applicants from Ontario Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology (CAAT)

Transfer credit will be considered for a course provided a grade of “B” or higher was achieved. A course with a grade of “C” may be considered only when there are an equal number of course equivalents with “A” grades. The granting of transfer credits will vary depending on the degree program and major to which the applicant is admitted. Nipissing University residency requirements apply.

Applicants who have successfully completed a two year Social Service Worker (SSW), Developmental Service Worker (DSW), Child and Youth Care (formerly Child and Youth Worker -CYW), Mental Health and Addictions (MHA) or Indigenous Wellness and Addiction Prevention Worker diploma program at an Ontario CAAT with a cumulative 3.0 GPA or above can be considered for admission to the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program with transfer credit to a maximum of 30 credits.

During Year 2 of the Bachelor of Social Work program, students must apply for admission consideration to the professional years (Years 3 & 4) of the program.  Admission to the first or second year of the Bachelor of Social Work program does not guarantee acceptance into the professional years.

Social Service Worker Diploma

Degree completion for Bachelor of Arts (Honours Specialization or Specialization in Social Welfare and Social Development)

Applicants who have successfully completed a two year Social Service Worker (SSW) diploma program at an Ontario CAAT with a cumulative 3.0 GPA or above can be considered for admission to an Honours Specialization or Specialization in Social Welfare and Social Development with transfer credit as follows:

Degree completion for Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice

Applicants who have successfully completed two year Community and Justice Services, Police Foundations or Law Clerk diploma programs at an Ontario CAAT with a cumulative average of “B+” (3.5 GPA) or better can be considered for admission to the Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice program (Corrections, Policing or Legal Studies and Administration streams respectively) with transfer credit to a maximum of 45 credits. Other programs can be applied to with a “B” average and a maximum of 30 credits of transfer credit granted.

Business Administration Diploma

Degree completion for Bachelor of Business Administration or Honours Bachelor of Business Administration

Graduates of a three-year Business Administration diploma at an Ontario CAAT with a cumulative 72% overall average can be considered for admission to the Bachelor of Business Administration degree or the Honours Bachelor of Business Administration degree with transfer credits to a maximum of 60 credits. Admitted students would be able to complete their program at Nipissing University in North Bay.

Graduates of a two-year Business Administration diploma at an Ontario CAAT with a cumulative 72% overall average can be considered for admission to the Bachelor of Business Administration degree or the Honours Bachelor of Business Administration degree with transfer credits to a maximum of 42 credits. Admitted students would be able to complete their program at Nipissing University in North Bay.

Degree completion for Bachelor of Commerce (four-year degree)

Graduates of a three-year Business Administration diploma at an Ontario CAAT with a cumulative 72% overall average can be considered for admission to the Bachelor of Commerce (four-year degree) with transfer credits to a maximum of 60 credits. Admitted students would be able to complete their program through one of our college partners or online as an independent learner.

Graduates of a two-year Business Administration diploma at an Ontario CAAT with a cumulative 72% overall average can be considered for admission to the Bachelor of Commerce (four-year degree) with transfer credits to a maximum of 42 credits. Admitted students would be able to complete their program online as an independent learner.

Degree completion for Bachelor of Commerce (three-year degree)

Graduates of a three-year Business Administration diploma at an Ontario CAAT with a cumulative 72% overall average can be considered for admission to the Bachelor of Commerce (three-year degree) with transfer credits to a maximum of 45 credits. Admitted students would be able to complete their program through one of our college partners or online as an independent learner.

Graduates of a two-year Business Administration diploma at an Ontario CAAT with a cumulative 72% overall average can be considered for admission to the Bachelor of Commerce (three-year degree) with transfer credits to a maximum of 30 credits. Admitted students would be able to complete their program online as an independent learner.

BTEC Higher National Diploma

Applicants who have successfully completed a six semester Edexcel BTEC Level 5 Higher National Diploma in Busines with 75 points on the best 75 credits or better can be considered for admission to the BBA or BComm degree program with transfer credit to a maximum of 60 credits towards the BBA and 45 credits toward the BComm.

Certified General Accountants of Ontario (CGA)

Applicants to the Bachelor of Commerce or Bachelor of Business Administration programs who have completed specific courses, with a minimum 60% average, through the Certified General Accountants of Ontario (CGA), will be eligible for transfer credit credit. Applicants with post diploma courses in Accounting where a grade of 70% or better has been achieved will be recommended to be of granted up to 15 transfer credits. The recommendation will be determined by the director or designate of the School of Business, decided by the Registrar’s Office and will be consistent with existing transfer credit practices.

Certified Aboriginal Financial Manager (CAFM) Diploma

Degree completion for Bachelor of Business Administration

Applicants who have successfully completed AFOA Canada's Certified Aboriginal Financial Manager (CAFM) diploma program with a minimum 65% in each course can be considered for admission to the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree with transfer credit to a maximum of 45 credits.

Degree completion for Bachelor of Commerce

Applicants who have successfully completed AFOA Canada's Certified Aboriginal Financial Manager (CAFM) diploma program with a minimum 65% in each course can be considered for admission to the Bachelor of Commerce (BComm) degree with transfer credit to a maximum of 30 credits.

Technology Advanced Diploma

Degree completion for Bachelor of Business Administration

Applicants who have successfully completed a three-year Technology Advanced diploma from an Ontario CAAT with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher will be considered for admission to the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) with transfer credit to a maximum of 60 credits.

Degree completion for Bachelor of Commerce

Applicants who have successfully completed a three-year Technology Advanced diploma from an Ontario CAAT with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher will be considered for admission to the Bachelor of Commerce (BComm) with transfer credit to a maximum of 45 credits.

Fine Arts

Degree completion for Bachelor of Fine Arts

Applicants who have completed a three-year diploma program in Fine Arts from an Ontario CAAT with a minimum cumulative average of 70% (3.0 GPA) will be considered for admission to the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) program with transfer credit to a maximum of 60 credits. All students admitted to the BFA are required to successfully complete the BFA Portfolio review by March 1 of their third year of study in order to remain in the BFA program. Students who are required to withdraw from the BFA may be eligible to continue in the BA in Fine Arts program.

Degree completion for Bachelor of Arts

Applicants who have completed a three-year diploma program in Fine Arts from an Ontario CAAT with a minimum cumulative average of 70% (3.0 GPA) will be considered for admission to the Bachelor of (BA) program in Fine Arts with transfer credit to a maximum of 42 credits.

Applicants who have completed a two-year diploma program with a Fine Arts focus (i.e. Fine Arts, Visual and Creative Arts, Art and Design) from an Ontario CAAT with a minimum cumulative average of 70% (3.0 GPA) will be considered for admission to the Bachelor of (BA) program in Fine Arts with transfer credit to a maximum of 30 credits.

Graphic Design

Degree completion for Bachelor of Fine Arts or Bachelor of Art (Major or Specialization in Fine Arts - Studio stream)

Applicants who have completed an advanced three-year diploma program in Graphic Design from an Ontario CAAT with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 will be considered for admission to the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) or the Bachelor of Arts (BA) Major or Specialization in Fine Arts (Studio stream) program with transfer credit to a maximum of 54 credits. All students admitted to the BFA are required to successfully complete the BFA Portfolio Assessment the year prior to their final year of study in order to remain in the BFA program. Students who are required to withdraw from the BFA may be eligible to continue in the BA in Fine Arts Major or Specialization program.

Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) Diploma

Degree completion for Bachelor of Science in Nursing

Nipissing University offers Registered Practical Nurses a 3-year compressed BScN Program. The Post RPN to BScN compressed program will be offered through a full-time delivery model and will be six semesters in length.

Successful completion of a two year Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) diploma with a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 from either one of the following colleges: Cambrian College, Canadore College, College Boreal, Confederation College, Northern College, Niagara College and Sault College, as well as successful completion of the Canadian Practical Nurses Registration Examination (CPNRE) or proof of eligibility to write and subsequently pass the CPNRE is required for admission consideration. This is a limited enrollment program.  The minimum GPA required for admission consideration may be higher than the stated minimum. There is only one intake per year (September).

Nipissing University offers currently employed Registered Practical Nurses the opportunity to complete the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) degree through a blended delivery option.  Admission consideration will be given to applicants who have successfully completed a two year Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) diploma (not certificate) from an Ontario college with a minimum GPA of 3.0.  Applicants must also be a current registered member in good standing with the College of Nurses in Ontario (CNO) as an RPN and be an employee (with a letter of support) of one Nipissing’s partner health care agencies. This is a limited enrollment program. The minimum GPA required for admission consideration may be higher than the stated minimum. There are two intakes per year (January and September).

Advertising and Marketing Communication Diploma

Degree completion for Bachelor of Arts in English Studies

Applicants who have successfully completed a two year Advertising and Marketing Communication diploma program at an Ontario CAAT with a cumulative 3.2 GPA or better can be considered for admission to the Bachelor of Arts in English Studies degree program with transfer credit to a maximum of 45 credits.

Stage and Screen Diploma

Degree completion for Bachelor of Arts in English Studies

Applicants who have successfully completed a three year Stage and Screen program at an Ontario CAAT with a cumulative 3.2 GPA or better can be considered for admission to the Bachelor of Arts in English Studies degree program with transfer credit to a maximum of 60 credits.

Applicants who have successfully completed a two year Stage and Screen program at an Ontario CAAT with a cumulative 3.2 GPA or better can be considered for admission to the Bachelor of Arts in English Studies degree program with transfer credit to a maximum of 45 credits.

b)   Special Canadore College of Applied Arts and Technology Advanced Standing Policies

Business Diploma

Applicants who have successfully completed a two-year Business diploma program from Canadore College with a minimum overall average of 78% may be considered for admission to the Bachelor of Commerce (four-year degree program) with up to a maximum of 60 transfer credits.

Environmental Protection Technician Diploma

Applicants who are graduates of the Environmental Technician – Protection and Compliance diploma program at Canadore College with a cumulative 3.25 GPA or better can be considered for admission to an Honours Specialization or Specialization in Biology or Environmental Biology and Technology programs with transfer credit to a maximum of 60 credits.

Environmental Protection Technology Diploma

Applicants who are graduates of the former Environmental Protection Technology diploma program at Canadore College with a cumulative 3.25 GPA or better can be considered for admission to Biology or Liberal Science programs with transfer credit to a maximum of 48 credits.

Applicants who are graduates of the former Environmental Protection Technology diploma program at Canadore College with a cumulative 3.25 GPA or better will be considered for admission to the Environmental Biology and Technology degree program with transfer credit to a maximum of 69 credits.

Biotechnology Technician Diploma

Applicants who are graduates of the Biotechnology Technician diploma program at Canadore College with a cumulative 3.25 GPA or better can be considered for admission to an Honours Specialization or Specialization in Biology or Environmental Biology and Technology with transfer credit to a maximum of 60 credits.

Biotechnology Technologist Diploma

Applicants who are graduates of the Biotechnology Technologist diploma program at Canadore College with a cumulative 3.25 GPA or better can be considered for admission to Honours Specialization or Specialization in Biology or Environmental Biology and Technology with transfer credit to a maximum of 60 credits.

Strength and Sport Conditioning Diploma

Recreation Therapy Diploma

Recreation and Leisure Services Diploma

Applicants who are graduates of the Strength Conditioning, Recreation Therapy or Recreation and Leisure Studies diploma programs at Canadore College with a minimum cumulative 3.2 GPA will be considered for admission to the Bachelor of Physical and Health Education (BPHE) program with transfer credit to a maximum of 42 credits.

c)    Special Georgian College Advanced Standing Policies

Fine Arts (Advanced) Diploma

Applicants who have completed a three-year diploma program in Fine Arts (Advanced) from Georgian College of Applied Art and Technology with a minimum overall 70% average (3.0 GPA) will be considered for admission to the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) program with transfer credit to a maximum of 66 credits.

Applicants who have completed a three-year diploma program in Fine Arts (Advanced) from Georgian College of Applied Art and Technology with a minimum overall 70% average (3.0 GPA) will be considered for admission to the Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Arts and Culture or Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Fine Arts programs with transfer credit to a maximum 48 credits.

All students admitted to the BFA are required to successfully complete the BFA Portfolio review within their first 30 Nipissing credits in order to remain in the BFA program. Students who are required to withdraw from the BFA may be eligible to continue in the BA in Fine Arts program.

Fine Arts Diploma

Applicants who have completed a two-year diploma program in Fine Arts from Georgian College of Applied Art and Technology with a minimum cumulative average of 70% (3.0 GPA) will be considered for admission to the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) program or the Bachelor of (BA) program in Arts and Culture with transfer credit to a maximum of 42 credits. All students admitted to the BFA are required to successfully complete the BFA Portfolio review by March 1 of their third year of study in order to remain in the BFA program. Students who are required to withdraw from the BFA may be eligible to continue in the BA in Fine Arts program.

d)   Special Fleming College (Haliburton School of the Arts) Advanced Standing Policy

Visual and Creative Arts Diploma

Applicants who have completed a two-year diploma program in Visual and Creative Arts from Fleming College (Haliburton School of the Arts) with a minimum cumulative average of 70% (3.0 GPA) will be considered for admission to the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) program or the Bachelor of (BA) program in Arts and Culture or Fine Arts with transfer credit to a maximum of 33 credits. All students admitted to the BFA are required to successfully complete the BFA Portfolio review by March 1 of their third year of study in order to remain in the BFA program. Students who are required to withdraw from the BFA may be eligible to continue in the BA in Fine Arts program.

e)   Special Humber College Advanced Standing Policy

Computer Engineering Technology Diploma

Applicants who are graduates of the Computer Engineering Technology (CET) diploma program at Humber College with a cumulative 3.0 GPA or better can be considered for admission to the Bachelor of Science (Honours Specialization or Specialization) in Computer Science with transfer credit to a maximum of 60 credits.

Electromechanical Engineering Technology Diploma

Applicants who are graduates of the Electromechanical Engineering Technology (EET) diploma program at Humber College with a cumulative 3.0 GPA or better can be considered for admission to the Bachelor of Science (Honours Specialization or Specialization) in Computer Science with transfer creditg to a maximum of 60 credits.

f)   Toronto Film School Transfer Credit Policy

Graphic Design and Interactive Media Diploma

Applicants who have successfully completed a four-semester Graphic Design and Interactive Media diploma program with a cumulative 3.2 GPA or above can be considered for admission to a Bachelor degree.  Applicants pursuing a four-year degree will be granted transfer credit to a maximum of 30 credits.  Those pursuing a three-year degree will be granted transfer credit to a maximum of 18 credits.

Fashion Design Diploma

Applicants who have successfully completed a six-semester Fashion Design diploma program with a cumulative 3.2 GPA or above can be considered for admission to a Bachelor degree.  Applicants pursuing a four-year degree will be granted transfer credit to a maximum of 45 credits.  Those pursuing a three-year degree will be granted transfer credit to a maximum of 30 credits.

Film Production Diploma

Applicants who have successfully completed a six-semester Film Production diploma program with a cumulative 3.2 GPA or above can be considered for admission to a Bachelor degree.  Applicants pursuing a four-year degree will be granted transfer credit to a maximum of 45 credits.  Those pursuing a three-year degree will be granted transfer credit to a maximum of 30 credits.

Writing for Film and Television Diploma

Applicants who have successfully completed a six-semester Writing for Film and Television diploma program with a cumulative 3.2 GPA or above can be considered for admission to a Bachelor degree.  Applicants pursuing a four-year degree will be granted transfer credit to a maximum of 45 credits.  Those pursuing a three-year degree will be granted transfer credit to a maximum of 30 credits.

Marketing for Fashion and Entertainment Diploma

Applicants who have successfully completed a six-semester Marketing for Fashion and Entertainment diploma program with a cumulative 3.2 GPA or above can be considered for admission to a Bachelor degree.  Applicants pursuing a four-year degree will be granted transfer credit to a maximum of 45 credits.  Those pursuing a three-year degree will be granted transfer credit to a maximum of 30 credits.

g) Lambton College Transfer Pathway

Esports Entrepreneurship & Administration Diploma 

Applicants who have graduated from the two-year Esports s Entrepreneurship & Administration diploma program at Lambton College, with an overall average of at least 70 percent or higher, may be eligible for admission to the Bachelor of Commerce (three-year) degree with transfer standing credit to a maximum of 30 credits.

Applicants who have graduated from the two-year Esports Entrepreneurship & Administration diploma program at Lambton College, with an overall average of at least 70 percent or higher, may be eligible for admission to the Bachelor of Commerce (four-year) degree with transfer standing credit to a maximum of 45 credits.

h) Algonquin College Transfer Pathway

Business Diploma 

Applicants who have successfully completed a two-year Business diploma program from Algonquin College with a minimum overall average of 78% may be considered for admission to the Bachelor of Commerce (four-year degree program) with up to a maximum of 60 transfer credits

Applicants from Accredited Canadian Colleges

Applicants to Nipissing University who have studied at an accredited Canadian college may qualify for admission to degree programs if they meet the minimum admissions requirements as outlined in the Ontario College of Applied Arts and Technology (CAAT) admission section above.

Bible College Applicants

Applicants from Bible Colleges and similarly religious based institutions that are accredited with the Association for Biblical Higher Education will follow the same policy for admission and advanced standing as for the CAATs.

No credit will be granted for courses in church education or administration, pastoral studies, or courses intended to promote a particular doctrinal or denominational belief.

Mature Student Applicants

Applicants who, according to the Office of the Registrar, do not qualify for undergraduate admission as a regularly qualified applicant may be considered for admission consideration as a mature student if they:

• will be 20 years of age or older by the end of the semester in which they wish to enrol;
• have been away from formal education (secondary school, community college, etc.) for at least the previous two years; and
• are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.

Mature student applicants to Bachelor of Science degrees or Bachelor of Arts degrees in Computer Science, Economics or Mathematics, must present the 4U or equivalent program specific prerequisites as listed in the Admission Chart in the Academic Calendar.

Mature student applicants to limited enrolment programs (Nursing and Physical and Health Education) are not able to apply for direct entry admission consideration to these programs. Mature student applicants interested in these programs may be admitted to another program and apply for transfer consideration for the following year. For transfer consideration applicants will need to present the 4U or equivalent program specific prerequisites as listed in the Admission Chart in the Academic Calendar.

Mature student applicants are still required to provide transcripts of marks for studies that have been previously completed or undertaken.

Mature students who qualify for admission can be admitted full-time on probation with a reduced course load to a maximum of 24 credits. Upon successful completion of the 18 credits and having cleared academic probation, mature students are eligible for a full 30 credit load status.

Foundations Pathway Program

The Foundations Pathway supports students’ transition from high school to university. This pathway is intended for students who are determined to earn a university education but have faced challenges in the academic environment. This pathway is intended for students who are determined to earn a university education but have faced challenges in the academic environment. Secondary school applicants are eligible for admission consideration to a Bachelor of Arts (BA) – Liberal Arts or Bachelor of Science (BSc) – Liberal Science Foundation Pathways programs if their admission average falls below 70%*. Applicants who are admitted to the BA Liberal Arts or BSc Liberal Sciencea Foundations Pathway program will be eligible to register in a maximum of 24 credits and must register in the following courses:

6 credits of AREA of INTEREST Courses:

Students can select up to six credits in a subject area(s) that most interests them. This could be the introductory course(s) for their chosen program of study or a subject area they would like to explore. To be eligible to progress in a BA or BSc program, students must achieve a minimum cumulative average of 60%. Students will be placed on probation if at least 18 credits have been attempted and the student’s cumulative average is between 55%-59%. Students placed on probation will be allowed continue on probation (maximum of 18 credits) and will be reassessed once a total of 30 credits have been attempted.

In some cases, as determined by Academic Advising, students may be given permission to take fewer FYFE courses in order to accommodate the courses required for their intended program of study. While students are required to take the FYFE courses as outlined above whenever possible, exceptions can be made in consideration with course availability and a student’s individual academic goals.

Students whose admission averages are above 70% can also consider the FYFE courses if they are interested in the course content. Upper year students on Academic Probation may also be encouraged to consider the FYFE courses.

*Applicants must present six 4U/4M courses or equivalent including ENG4U or equivalent. If you wish to be considered for admission to the Liberal Science option, you must also present 2 of SCH4U, Mathematics (MCV4U or MHF4U) or SPH4Uor equivalent. 

Indigenous Foundations Program

Applicants may be considered for admission to the Indigenous Foundations Program if they:

• are of Aboriginal ancestry;
• are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident

Applicants will be required to submit:

• two letters of reference (one personal and one professional;
• an updated resume outlining educational and work experience;
• a two-page statement explaining why they wish to attend university and how they plan on being successful in their academic pursuits; and
• official secondary school and postsecondary (if applicable) transcripts

Applicants may also be asked to participate in an interview.

Admission to a degree program from the Indigenous Foundations Program

Students who have successfully completed the Indigenous Foundations Program are eligible to apply for admission consideration for degree programs at Nipissing University if they:

• Have a minimum overall average of 60% on the best 18 credits attempted;
• Have a minimum overall average of 60% on six of the following nine credits from the following courses:  ACAD-1501, NATI 1506 and/or NATI 1507

Students who have successfully completed the Indigenous Foundation Program are eligible to apply for admission consideration on probation for degree programs at Nipissing University if they:

• Have a minimum overall average of 55-59% on the best 18 credits attempted;
• Have a minimum overall average of 55-59% on six of the following nine credits from the following courses:  ACAD-1501, NATI 1506 and/or NATI 1507

Students interested in admission consideration to Bachelor of Science degrees or Bachelor of Arts degrees in Computer Science, Economics or Mathematics, must present 4U or equivalent program prerequisites as listed in the Admission Chart in the Academic Calendar.

Students interested in admission consideration to limited enrolment programs (Nursing and Physical and Health Education) may be required to have higher averages than those listed above in addition to presenting 4U or equivalent program prerequisites as listed in the Admission Chart in the Academic Calendar.

Students interested in admission consideration to Concurrent Education will be required to meet the admission requirements for Upper Year Admission to Concurrent Education as outlined in the Academic Calendar.

Home-schooling Applicants

Applications for admission to undergraduate studies will be considered for those who have completed their high school education through a program of home-schooling. The type of program, measurable results (i.e. SAT/AP/ACT scores etc.) and other factors (including letters of reference, personal interview) may be taken into consideration in the admission decision of such applicants. Interested applicants are encouraged to contact the Admissions Office for more information.

Other Applicants

Admission to Degree Upgrading for Nipissing University Graduates

Students who have graduated with a Nipissing three-year General degree (Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science) may upgrade their major subject to either an Honours Specialization or Specialization according to the criteria outlined below.

Upgrade to an Honours Degree with an Honours Specialization

Students who have graduated with a Nipissing three-year Bachelor of Arts or three-year Bachelor of Science degree, and who wish to upgrade to an Honours Bachelor of Arts or an Honours Bachelor of Science degree, with an honours specialization in the same subject of study, may apply for readmission to the University indicating their intent to pursue an Honours upgrade in the same subject of study on the application for re-admission.

To graduate with an Honours Bachelor degree students must meet the current published requirements for the Honours degree and the Honours Specialization as specified in the Academic Calendar for the year they are re-admitted.

Upgrade to a Bachelor Degree with a Specialization

Students who have graduated with a Nipissing three-year Bachelor of Arts or three-year Bachelor of Science degree, and who wish to upgrade to a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree with a specialization in the same subject of study, may apply for readmission to the University indicating their intent to pursue an upgrade in the same subject of study on the application for re-admission.

To graduate with Bachelor degree students must meet the current published requirements for the Bachelor degree and the Specialization as specified in the Academic Calendar for the year they are re-admitted.

Admission to a Second Degree Program

Students possessing an undergraduate degree may proceed to a second undergraduate degree program in another area of study. Students may be admitted to a second degree program if they hold a recognized university degree from an accredited university. A second degree in Nursing may require the repeating of core credits taken in the first degree, if they are more than 10 years old.

Exceptions to Normal Admission Requirements – All Undergraduate Degree Programs

The Academic Awards, Appeals and Petitions Committee (AAAPC) may consider requests to modify admission requirements for applicants who do not meet admission requirements, but whom in its opinion, deserve special consideration. In all cases, the Committee reserves the right to impose special conditions on such candidates, in the interest of students and for the protection of the University’s academic standards. Candidates requesting modification of admission requirements must present their cases to the Committee, in writing, and produce documentary evidence as appropriate, of their eligibility for special consideration. The Committee’s decision is final.

 

Readmission

Previous Nipissing students who have not registered in courses for more than an 18-month period are required to apply for readmission before they will be permitted to register and will be required to follow the degree and program requirements for the calendar year in which they resume their enrollment.  Registration information will be provided once they have been readmitted to the University.

Admission to Non-Degree Studies

Auditors

To audit a university course, applicants must be admissible to a Nipissing degree program. Auditors must have completed prerequisite courses or equivalent for the course which they want to audit. Courses that are more practical in nature such as (but not limited to) computer science, nursing, languages, physical education, music and fine arts are not open to auditors. Degree students have priority in registration for limited enrolment courses. Application forms for admission are available from the Office of the Registrar.

Letter of Permission Applicants

Students enrolled at other recognized universities may apply for admission on a Letter of Permission and be admitted to Nipissing for purposes of transfer of credit to their home universities. Documentation required for admission is the Nipissing University Application Form and a Letter of Permission issued from the home university specifying the course(s) to be taken. Letter of Permission Applicants must apply directly to Nipissing for each term they wish to register for. The Letter of Permission must be received at Nipissing prior to the start of classes being registered for. Some courses are not open to students on Letter of Permission. There is no guarantee that a student on a Letter of Permission will be able to register in a courses simply because they have received a letter of permission. Nipissing degree students take precedent over non-degree students in limited enrolment courses.

It is the responsibility of the visiting student to order an official Nipissing transcript to be sent to the home university after the course is completed.

Special Student Admission

The holders of recognized university degrees may be admitted as Special Students (i.e. non-degree) with the intention of taking courses for interest, upgrading, a qualifying year, or for the purpose of meeting the requirements for a professional designation etc. Course prerequisites must be met. Contact the Office of the Registrar for information.

Special Interest Admission

Applicants wishing to complete courses on a special interest basis are welcome to apply.  Students can complete up to 18 credits on a special interest basis. Once students have completed 18 credits they must apply for admission consideration to a degree program if they wish to continue taking courses.
