HIST 2377  History of Nursing

Prerequisites:

6 credits of History at the 1000 level or any 24 credits completed

Hours:

Three hours per week for one term.

Description:

Students consider the history of nurses and nursing in an international context. Students begin with a look at Florence Nightingale and the founding of modern nursing. Students discuss changes to nursing in the 20th century from the rise of “expert” knowledge, the feminist movement, two World Wars, and shifting attitudes towards the practice of medicine after 1945. Students conclude by discussing current views on nursing in the context of women’s studies and women’s history.
