Description:

In this course, students explore the history, politics, and philosophy of multiculturalism with an emphasis on the Canadian experience. The study of the origins of multiculturalism in relation to liberalism and nationalism, the tension between individual and group rights, articulations of citizenship and cultural identity, demands for equality and the desire for cultural differentiation will be among the topics covered. Overall, the overarching goal of this course is to better understand the genesis, growth and potential decline of the multicultural state.
