Description:
Students examine representations of race, violence, and criminal justice in mainstream media and their connection to interlocking systems of race, gender, and economic inequality. Students explore the relation between representations of crime and public emotion: how media accounts of fictional violence may render us less able to see, or be moved by, the everyday violence of real life; and, how media portrayals of murder are mobilized by social justice activists to advocate for social change.
