Teacher of Anishnaabewin as a Second Language

Program Requirements:

The program consists of two onsite summer sessions to be held at Nipissing University in North Bay, online courses held during the fall, winter and spring sessions, and two in-school internships.

Students must complete 60 credits as follows:

  • EDUC 1436: Anishnaabemwin Curriculum 1
  • EDUC 1456: Anishnaabemwin Language 1
  • EDUC 1446: Ojibwe Team Teaching 1
  • EDUC 1546: Anishnaabemwin Language Methodologies 1
  • EDUC 2436: Anishnaabemwin Curriculum 2
  • EDUC 2456: Anishnaabemwin Language 2
  • EDUC 2446: Ojibwe Team Teaching 2
  • EDUC 2546: Anishnaabemwin Language Methodologies 2
  • EDUC 4716: Legal and Social Foundations of Education
  • EDUC 4726: Diversity and Inclusion
  • EDUC 4736: Introduction to Curriculum Design and Teaching
  • EDUC 4746: Assessment, Evaluation and Communication of Student Learning
  • EDUC 4756: Curriculum Design and Inquiry
  • EDUC 4766: Technology Enriched Teaching and Learning
  • EDUC 4776: Special Needs of Students
  • EDUC 4946: History, Policy and Aboriginal Education
  • EDUC 4947: Understanding Indigenous Pedagogies

Practicum Courses:

 

Internship One

Students enroll in EDUC 4714 Practicum I.  Students are placed in a primary, junior, intermediate and/or senior division classroom. TASL students are required to successfully complete an internship session in all four divisions.

At the end of the first session and internship one, successful students can apply to the Ontario College of Teachers to be eligible to receive a Transitional Certificate of Qualification and Registration that allows you to teach for up to six years. Students must complete the program within six years and must also maintain good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers during this time by paying the annual membership fee.

Internship Two

Students enroll in EDUC 4858 Community Leadership Experience and EDUC 4855 Practicum II.  Students are placed in a primary, junior, intermediate and/or senior division classroom. TASL students are required to successfully complete an internship session in all four divisions.

Successful candidates will be reported to the Ontario College of Teachers for a Certificate of Qualification and Registration with the credential: Native Language Teacher Certification Program.
