Description:

Applying diverse historical and theoretical perspectives to the study of such themes as sports, politics, war, sexuality, desire, and popular culture, this course will help students think through questions about the social construction of masculinities as expressions of power. Do the masculinities of Eminem and Tiger Woods have anything in common with Canadian soldiers? What distinguishes hockey heroes from drag as 'performances' of masculinity? These are just some of the questions we will be asking as we consider and unsettle the multiple and complex power relations that exist across the categories of gender, race, class, sexuality, age, and disability.
